This multipurpose fireman's tool would be carried in a pouch on their uniform. Dating to c. 1900, the tool would break into a wall or roof, open a fire hydrant, pry open a locked door or window, turn off a gas valve and disassemble a bed. In early days, the bed was often considered the most valuable piece of furniture in the house. This early design functioned so well that today's fireman's tools are very similar.
