This hand-cranked boring machine, c. 1900 or earlier, was used to drill holes for mortise and tenon joints, as well as peg holes, for post and beam frames prior to assemby. The operator would sit on the base, which was on top of the post or beam, then use both hands to drill a hole. It was not an easy task, but better than using hand augers.
